The right coolant for a VW Golf 6

The Golf 6 is the sixth edition of the famous Golf series and the direct successor of the VW Golf 5. Built in the period between 2008 and 2012, the compact class, like its predecessors, was sold millions of times in Germany and still characterizes the streetscape in Germany. From the first edition to the Golf has changed not only externally and on the engine, but also the cooling system was changed, which also resulted in a further development of the coolant.

Especially with the VW coolant, the concentrate has changed with its acid additives. Thus, the first coolants were still enriched with inorganic acid. Up to the VW G13 coolant and VW G12evo, meanwhile, much has changed, as these rely on more environmentally friendly additives.

How to find the right coolant

For every car owner, this information can be found in the vehicle manual under the appropriate heading, among other things. Volkswagen uses its own standard for this.

Depending on the year of manufacture or engine, you will find a recommendation for G12, G12+, G12++, G13 or G12evo coolant. However, the G12 coolant has already been replaced by the G12evo coolant.

If you don’t have a vehicle manual at hand or simply want to save yourself the time, you will find a precise list of the Golf 6 models and which coolant they require in the following tables. In addition, you will find information about the total volume of the cooling system of your car.

Which coolants can be used for a Golf 6?

As a VW driver, you have the choice of using an original VW coolant or an approved alternative. The original concentrate is of course used from the factory for your Golf 6. However, the alternatives are in no way inferior to the original. They usually even meet this recommendation and have therefore been approved by VW. In a price comparison, the product alternatives are also cheaper.

The table below shows that the VW G12++ and VW G13 were used for the Golf 6 series. VW no longer produces these standards, but only the latest standard, the VW G12evo. Since this coolant is mixable with the previous G12 and G13 coolants, you currently only have this choice if you want to use an original VW coolant.

You can use these alternatives

On the market of coolant concentrates, there are many alternatives available. As an example, we take two very well-known manufacturers, which know how to convince with high quality. We are talking about Glysantin and Ravenol. Glysantin, which is part of the BASF Group, now also offers its expertise in coolants to other automotive manufacturers. For example, Glysantin produces the original concentrate for BMW. Ravenol is one of the insider tips. The German manufacturer has specialized in a wide range of applications with its coolants.

Glysantin coolant for the Golf 6

To find the right Glysantin radiator antifreeze for a VW, all you need is the Glysantin product finder. Since the Golf 6 was only manufactured from 2008 onwards, only Glysantin G40 comes into question, according to the manufacturer.

The G40 standard is similar to the VW G12++ standard and thus meets Volkswagen’s internal quality requirements. The G40 is available in the classic concentrate. In an even ratio to water, it can be filled into the cooling system and protects the engine at outside temperatures as low as -40 degrees.

Ravenol coolant for the Golf 6

In the Ravenol product catalog it is very quick and easy to find the right coolant for any car. Regardless of the model, Ravenol focuses on the year of manufacture for each VW.

With regard to the Golf 6, which has been built since 2008, Ravenol recommends two coolants for the Golf 6 models. On the one hand, the Ravenol LTC C12++ (corresponds to the VW TL-774 G approval, so the VW G12++) and the Ravenol LGC C13 (has the VW TL 777-J approval, so VW G13).

Coolant quantity for a Golf 6

VW recommends a total of two different VW coolant standards for the Golf 6. One is the VW specific marking TL-774G. This number corresponds to the G12++ standard, or Glysantin G40 or Ravenol LTC C12++. On the other hand, the VW G13 coolant is recommended. The G12evo presents itself as the successor of these standards and can be used if you want to use an original VW coolant. Which amount your Golf 6 needs and which coolant standard, you can find out in the following tables.
